From the West Middlesex Gazette, 20/04/1929, p.14 :
Southall were beaten 4-2 by Hampstead at Western-road on Wednesday evening in the semi-final of the Middlesex Charity Cup, a small crowd of 714 (gate receipts £16 11s) witnessed a tame and rather uninteresting game.
Southall had a re-arranged side, which included a reserve forward line, and Hampstead, who also included several reserves, had the advantage in attack. Southall wore black armlets in memory of the late Mr. C. Thomson, who was a vice-president and trustee of the club.
Hampstead had slightly the better of the opening play, and Potter, from a neat pass by Shone, gave them the lead after 20 minutes. Southall later had more of the play, but Hampstead's forwards were more dangerous near goal, and Holding made a fine save when he tipped over a good shot from Potter. The teams changed over without interval, and Holding conceded a corner in saving a shot from Shone. Fifteen minutes after half-time, Moore, from an unmarked position, ran through and beat Holding at close range. Southall attacked strongly, and Wenham reduced the lead by heading through when Smith fisted out a beautiful drive by Bell. In the next minute, however, Vanner put Hampstead further ahead with a shot that went in off the upright. A rally by Southall towards the close ended in Wenham scoring again from a scrimmage, but just before the end Shone shot a fourth goal for Hampstead.
