Showing nothing like their form at the beginning of the season, Hampstead suffered another defeat on Saturday against Kingstonian, who, with a weakened team owing to injuries, scored three goals to one. Before a moderate crowd and in a bad light, Hampstead won the toss, but Kingstonian were soon pressing. A nice forward pass by Macey put E. Rassell away, but he shot wide. Then, from the half-way line, Wardlaw took a shot at goal, which was beautifully cleared by Brodick. Kingstonian were awarded the first corner kick off Bucci, and a nice centre to Dibley saw this player with a first-time kick send a shot right across the goal-mouth. In clearing from a run-away, Bucci handled just outside the penalty area, and from the free kick the "K's" nearly scored, Smith fumbling the ball when clearing. From a pass by E. Rassell, who, working his way from the centre position, put across a nice centre, McCarthy scored Kingstonian's first goal after twenty minutes.
Hampstead were then rather unfortunate in not equalising. From a nice cross shot by Sherman close in Moore placed the ball in the net, only to find that he had been given offside, the referee refusing to alter his decision despite appeals by the Hampstead players. A few minutes later Macey gave E. Rassell a fine pass, and with a first-time shot E. Rassell put the "K's" further ahead. Hampstead tried hard to reduce the lead, and a nice forward movement by Moore was followed by a beautiful centre which Shearcroft headed just outside. Just on half-time Hampstead were given a corner, and a fine centre by Moore saw the ball come to Vanner, who, with a fast shot, scored for Hampstead.
With the commencement of the second half the light lifted. Until then it had been impossible to see the whole of the field. Determined to get an equaliser, Hampstead pressed heavily, but a fine centre by Sherman was cleared by Brodick for a corner, which proved of no avail. After fifteen minutes Kingstonian were awarded a penalty for a foul by Parsons on McMurray, and the shot, taken by E. Rassell, was well saved by Smith. Vanner on numerous occasions excelled in his passing, but when passing to Potter or Moore the effort was nearly always wasted. From a corner by McCarthy, Dibley scored the Kingstonians' third goal. From now onwards Hampstead were on the defence, and some fine clearances were made by Smith, who had two good backs in Parsons and Bucci in front of him. It was noticed that in the second half Sherman had little to do. When he received a pass it was too far up the field or else over the line. There was no more scoring, the Kingstonians running out good winners by three goals to one.
The pick of the Kingston team were Macey, Triesman and E. Rassell, playing in an unaccomplished position of centre-forward, while for Hampstead special mention must be made of Vanner, Smith, Parsons and Moody.
