Match Report

Hampstead played their last home match on Saturday, Arsenal Reserves winning by four goals to two. Although there was not that measure of interest which is attached to a Cup-tie or League game, those present thoroughly enjoyed the game, as there was some delightful footwork on the part of the visitors. Thanks to Mr. H. Chapman, the manager of the Arsenal club, who is a resident of Hendon, Hampstead had the pleasure of meeting a strong combination, notwithstanding one or two changes in the advertised eleven. The match was the outcome of a talk at the recent dinner of the Golders Green Traders Sports Club, when Mr. A. Gordon Raymond, president of the Hampstead F.C., presided, and Mr. Chapman was one of the guests.

Earlier in the season Hampstead went under by seven goals to none to Tottenham Hotspur Reserves, but this performance was improved upon last Saturday, the Arsenal, though perceptibly the better side, having two goals only in hand at the finish.

In the first half, during which the visitors had to face a strong wind, there were no goals. The goal-keepers were not greatly troubled, but Hampstead missed some fine opportunities. Shearcroft made one exceptionally good shot, which skimmed the bar, and Vanner, who was responsible for excellent work, made some good efforts, but the forward line as a whole compared unfavourably with the visiting quintette, whose passing was delightful to watch. The half-backs fed them judiciously, although now and again the wind upset their calculations.

In the second half Lambert, the visitors' centre, found the net three times with good shots, but Hampstead persevered, Sherman putting in a lot of work. From one of Sherman's sprints and centres Shearcroft scored, while from a corner kick, well taken by Sherman, Bucci headed the ball past Foster. Before the end, however, Blyth, the visiting captain, whose work at left-half was much admired, got a fourth goal, the ball striking the cross-bar before entering the net.
