Match Report

At kick-off time, the home goalkeeper had not arrived, and E. Worthington deputised. His display showed he was no stranger to the position as, though never under heavy pressure, he made a number of excellent clearances.

The experiment of moving Gallacher to inside right was a success. His ball distribution was first rate and both Stroud and Fair received much improved service. A special word of praise in an excellent all-round display by the team should go to Topp, who played a classic game, and to Bossoms for his speed and rugged defence.

The Green started off at a cracking pace and literally ran the visitors off their feet. After heavy pressure, Cox passed to Goodchild, who beat his man well and shot home to open the score within the first 10 minutes. Soon afterwards, Fair was put through on his own, but Harper made a brilliant clearance. Two quick goals in the 22nd and 25th minutes, however, settled the issue. The first of these was scored by Gallacher from a pass by Stroud, and the other by Fair, who received via Gallacher and Stroud.

Another great effort by Fair, who turned quickly to put in a fine shot, was magnificently parried by Harper. After 35 minutes, the Green scored their 4th. Harper couuld only tip a ball from Goodchild to Fair, who was well up, and the centre forward made no mistake.

After the interval Wood Green re-arranged their side and for a time pressed hard. They were kept at bay by a sound defence, and the home side again took up the attack. After 15 minutes, Maloney, who improves witth every game, kicked the ball forward: Harper failed to gather, and Fair, once more in the right place at the right time, shot well and truly into the net to put Golders Green five up.

Wood Green never gave up trying, and Worthington made two good saves; once again the visitors were repelled, and the Green again swarmed round the visitors' goal. After half an hour, Stroud, taking a corner, put the ball in well for Gallacher to score the 6th. Four minutes later, Cox passed to Fair, who passed the ball out to Stroud to run through and score the 7th with a shot which went right through the net and out the other side!

About 5 minutes from time, Martin scored Wood Green's consolation point.
