Golders Green, in spite of re-arrangements necessitated by a depleted side, must be considered unlucky not to have shared the points with Barnet on Saturday. They had, if anything, more of the play and more scoring chances, but, after all, it is goals that count!
Bossoms, Worthington and Mitchell were absent for various reasons from the side originally selected. Cox came in at inside left, Fisher moved to left back, and Gallacher took over at centre half. Stroud played inside right, and D. Keene, a local junior, was right winger.
The changes did not weaken the defence : Fisher dealt well with the dangerous Jordan, while Gallacher, though inclined to take risks, was a good centre-half : but the forward line took some time to settle down. Stroud did excellent work at inside right, and Cox worked tirelessly at inside left, while Keene showed promise that with experience in the reserve XI, he will develop into a useful winger. There was, however, more cohesion about the Barnet vanguard when it got moving and Saw was better served with the ball than was Fair, the Green's centre forward. The visitors exercised heavier and more sustained pressure than Barnet, and Powell was frequently called upon to deal with dangerous shots. He played a great game in goal for the home side.
Barnet kicked down the slope and took the lead in 10 minutes. The ball came in from Jordan to Saw who shot low. McCann appeared to have the ball covered but it slipped past him into the net. The interval came without further score.
A quarter of an hour after resuming Golders Green were on terms. Powell came out to deal with Fair, but the ball was sent across to Goodchild, who scored easily. For a time the Green pressed hard and the home goal had several narrow escapes. Barnet, however, gradually recovered and hit back. After Reilly had missed a golden chance, Jordan again sent the ball in for Saw to run on to and net the winning goal after 35 minutes.
Golders Green tried hard to get level, and were unlucky in not equalising: Fair beat Powell for the ball, which ran loose, but there was no one able to force it home.
Just on time, Barnet broke away - the Green were all up in attack - Reilly crossed the ball to Jordan, who, however, shot into the side netting.
