Golders Green put up an excellent performance last Saturday by defeating St. Albans City on the Clarence Park enclosure, by 3-1.
On their first half display, they well merited their victory. They played sparkling football at a fine pace, and kept the ball swinging well. The opening 45 minutes were the highlight of the game and during this period all the goals were scored. The second half did not produce nearly such good football from either side, though Golders Green still had more openings : their wings during this half, however, developed individualistic tendencies - pretty, no doubt, but not productive of goals.
The stars of the visiting side in attack were Fair and Gallacher : the former played a dashing game and both his goals were splendid efforts. Gallacher's ball distribution was a feature of the match, his long, swinging, accurate passes frequently opening up the St. Albans defence. The Green's half back line was excellent, while the backs put up a rugged defence.
The game was not more than a minute old when Stroud and Gallacher put Fair through. As Gillians advanced, the Green's young centre forward, with the coolness of a veteran, calmly lobbed the ball over the head of the goalkeeper, into the net.
St. Albans gained two corners before Gallacher hit the cross bar, and Cox put one just wide. The Green had far more of the play territorially, and it was no surprise when they increased their lead at the end of half an hour. Gallacher passed to Fair, whose shot hit the bar: as it rebounded, Fair managed to get his head to it, the ball whizzing into the net, giving Gillians no chance.
After Elliott had put wide for St. Albans and Gillians had been heavily tested, Topp started the movement which put Golders Green three up : Gallacher gained possession and put through for Cox to head past Gillians. Right from the kick-off, St. Albans broke away and, receiving from Pipe, Elliott shot past Joy into the corner of the goal.
The second half was rather scrappy and neither side could be said to have deserved to score.
