In defeating Walthamstow Grange on Saturday by 3 goals to 2, in the Premier Division London League, Hampstead Town accomplished their best performance in their short career as senior club. The visitors, admittedly one of the leading amateur sides in London, fielded their best eleven, and a large crowd witnessed the finest game at the Avenue ground this season. Every man in the Hampstead team rose to the occasion, and their victory was well merited. The Grange “boys" opened the scoring, J. Norman, at inside-left, putting in a grand drive from a free kick which gave Matthews no chance. This did not check the efforts of the home forwards, however, and from an excellent centre by G. Garlick, who was deputising on the right wing, A. W. Humphreys netted, this being the extent of the scoring in the first half. The Town set up a fierce attack on resuming, and A. Tomkins gave them lead, to the delight of the crowd. This was followed by a further excellent goal to the credit of Humphreys. The Grange, however, would not be denied, making many gallant attempts to get on terms, and just before the final whistle Norman increased their score. The Town included two new players in their team, E. J. E. Wright giving a polished display at centre-half, while “Todge” Woodward, a well-known local player, operated at right-half, and with the assistance of W. H. Hooper effectually checkmated the movements of the noted left-winger, J. Oliver, who, however, did not get the “spur.” F. W. Matthews excelled himself in the Town goal and did not make a mistake throughout the game, the crowd warmly congratulating him on cleverly saving a penalty kick taken by the Grange captain, F. J. Warrick. This victory places the Town in a commanding position in the London League table.
