The Town capitulated to Southall in the Football Association Cup competition last Saturday at the Avenue Ground by 3 goals to 1.
In this, their first defeat of the season, the Town had at least the satisfaction of being beaten by a better team on the day's play.
A local crowd of over 1500 witnessd an exceedingly fast and robust game of the typical cup-tie order. Southall early established a lead of two goals, the first a dropping shot by Stone completely deceiving Matthews, who had the sun in his eyes: the second an easy task for Harman, who scored while the whole of the 21 other players and the crowd were expecting the whistle to be blown for a goal kick.
With this substantial encouragement Southall continued to play splendidly, while the Town throughout gave a display much below their usual form, and their re-arranged forward line, ncessitated by injuries received the previous week, did not operate as successfully as the usual combination.
Southall scored again in the second half, and for a foul on Pike the Town were awarded a penalty. F. Matthews played a sterling game in goal for the Town, one flying save of his deserving special mention.
