The visit of Enfield proved an excellent attraction at the Avenue Ground last Saturday, the result being a win for the visitors by 3 goals to 2.
This is the first reverse experienced by the Town this season and as they had the misfortune to score once for their opponents, a division of honours would have been a more accurate reflection of the play; indeed, Dale, the Enfield custodian, who gave a clever display throughout, had far more attacks to negotiate than the home goalkeeper.
In the early stages of the game during a period of pressure the Town's centre-half, J. Schebsman, accidentally opened the Enfield score. This was quickly neutralised, however, for immediately from the kick-off F. Rayner forced a corner and placed the ball beautifully for A. W. Humphreys to head into the net.
The Town took the lead early in the second portion, O. Warren scoring a fine goal after a clever individual effort. Enfield wore down the opposing defence in the concluding stages, and by the aid of McCormick and Duck scored twice, in each case after a melee in the goalmouth.
