Match Report

Hampstead [Town] gained a notable victory in the Athenian League at the Avenue Ground, Child's Hill, last Saturday, entertaining and defeating Bromley, the present leaders in the competition, by two goals to one. Assuming that Hampstead maintain their present convincing form, this success will have an important bearing on the championship. Notwithstanding their recent strenuous cup-tie experiences, Bromley placed a representative eleven in the field, and the game was fast and exciting throughout.

Thirty minutes after the start F.L. Burrage scored a fine goal for Hampstead from a pass by A.E. Mallett, and although further brilliant efforts were made by both teams nothing occurred to alter the score at the interval.

After the change over Hampstead pressed continuously and practically dominated the play. A breakaway by Bromley resulted in a corner kick from which E.A.R. Hewitt placed the ball well out of the reach of Dale. With both teams now striving for supremacy the final stages of the game were thrilling, and in negotiating a determined attack in the last ten minutes A.M. Kennard, Bromley's left back, handled in the penalty area. G.F. Blackburn, who took the kick, shot straight at Vines, but with such force that the ball rebounded into play and he made no mistake with his second attempt. This well-deserved win places Hampstead in a most favourable position in the league table.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Wimbledon, who have had a remarkable run of success in various cup matches, visit the Avenue Ground in the Athenian League. Kick off 2.30. Hampstead also play at home in the Athenian League on Boxing Day, 11 am., and Saturday December 27th, at 2.30.
