Hampstead [Town] visited Chelmsford on Saturday in the Athenian League, and returned the victors by 4 goals to 2. The Essex county town club, famous for their introduction to football of Vivian J. Woodward, had the advantage on this occasion of his services, and he received an ovation from the large crowd. He played throughout the game - his first this season - in inimitable style, making grand openings for his partners, and sending in some stinging shots, all of which H.J. Dale, in the Hampstead goal, successfully negotiated, making one noteworthy effort in smothering a wonderful ground kick which seemed certain to score.
Chelmsford made an encouraging start, Hennessey getting a good goal within a minute of the kick off. Hampstead's equaliser was not long delayed, J.P. Croal scoring direct from a corner kick, the opposing goalie giving it the requisite legitimacy by touching but failing to clear the ball en route. Lark, who played well at centre forward, enabled Chelmsford to cross over with a goal lead.
On resuming, however, Hampstead showed marked superiority; the general play of the team being excellent. The well-deserved goals were long deferred, and it was only twenty minutes before time when J.P. Croal equalised, Hampstead's winning shots being notched in quick succession by G.F. Blackburn and W. Little. H.H. Allwright and E.J. Wright shared the honours in neutralising many of the dangerous movements instituted by the great Woodward. The game was contested throughout in splendid style, not a single foul being recorded on either side.
With a view to sustaining the great interest now centred in the Hampstead club, a strong Supporters' Association has been formed. At a recent meeting held at Club Headquarters, and attended by a very large gathering, Mr. C.E. Timms, the club chairman, outlined the aims, objects, and advantages of the association, and the greatest enthusiasm prevailed. The activities of this association will do much to advance the club and maintain and enhance the reputation it has achieved in Senior Amateur football circles.
Tomorrow (Saturday) Bromley, the present leaders of the Athenian League, visit the Avenue ground, Child's Hill, in that competition. Kick off 2.30. Hampstead will, as usual, be strongly represented.
