Hampstead [Town] successfully negotiated one of the most important of their remaining fixtures in the Athenian League, visiting and defeating Metrogas on the Old Kent Road ground by 3 goals to 1, an exceptionally meritorious performance, in view of the recent cup-tie form of their opponents. Metrogas fielded the same team that defeated Nunhead in the Surrey Senior Cup on the previous Saturday, and were extremely confident. Hampstead, however, gave a polished exhibition, and their forwards displayed a fine understanding, securing a 2-1 lead at the interval, J. Hall and F.A. Yates scoring for Hampstead, and Calvert for the home side. Twenty muinutes after resuming, J. Hall made the issue safe for Hampstead, whose defence, with H.H. Allwright, back in form, and H.J. Dale, operating well in goal, held together superbly. This success places Hampstead at the head of the League table.
At Child's Hill the reserve sides of the two clubs met in a friendly encounter, and the locals played so well that they enabled Hampstead to register a double event, beating Metrogas " A " by 3 goals to 2. A.F. Cornish, a new and promising centre on trial for Hampstead, score all three points.
Tomorrow (Saturday) Hampstead have arranged a most attractive fixture at the Avenue Ground with " The Arsenal " reserves. The visit of the famous First Division reserve side, including as it does a majority of players celebrated throughout the football world, will undoubtedly attract a crowd of sufficient dimensions to reward the enterprise of the Hampstead officials in securing the match.
