Hampstead Town, although gratified by their meritorious series of cup-tie successes over a variety of teams, were anxious to secure a real test of the strength of their combination. The famous Wycombe Wanderers Football Club, hitherto unbeaten this season, furnished the opportunity for fair judgment in the Divisional Final of the Football Association Cup at the Avenue ground, Child's Hill, last Saturday, and brought with them a team worthy in every respect [of] their club's great reputation, but also over 500 staunch and enthusiastic supporters to cheer and encourage them. Nevertheless, Hampstead won comfortably by 4 goals to 1, and although the score is somewhat flattering to the home side, on the run of the play no doubt existed at any period of the game as to which was the better team.
Within five minutes from the start G.F. Blackburn scored for Hampstead with a well-deserved penalty kick. Ten minutes later the Town's popular captain and centre-half, E.J.E. Wright, converted a fine centre by A.E. Mallett, and before the interval G.F. Blackburn again scored with a beautiful shot. Wycombe responded only once, with a good goal registered by their clever inside-right, T. Jackman. F.L. Burrage scored Hampstead's fourth in the second period, the result of good work by G.H. Garlick on the left wing. Wycombe were well served in all departments, particularly by their right wing, A. Grace and T. Jackman; and A. Gomm, their noted centre-half, was always prominent.
Hampstead have created a record in the football world by their good fortune in the draw for the various cups, and tomorrow (Saturday) will play their eighth successive cup-tie at the Avenue ground, Chesham United (an unbeaten team) being entertained in the Divisional Final of the Amateur Cup. Kick-off 2.30.
In the next (the fourth) round of the qualifying competition for the English Cup, Hampstead Town have again come out of the hat first, their opponents being Gnome Athetic - an unbeaten side this year. This will be the ninth successive cup-tie on the Avenue ground at Cricklewood, and must surely be a record for any club.
