Hampstead Town sustained their first cup-tie defeat this season at the Avenue Ground, Child's Hill, last Saturday, Chesham United, in a clean and keen game, winning the Divisional final of the Amateur Cup by the narrow margin of two goals to one, a result which fairly represented the game. The visitors fielded a remarkably fine eleven, with an unbeaten record, and Hampsteadians were regaled with a fine exhibition of football between well-matched teams.
Although winning the toss, Hampstead elected to play against a strong cross wind, and secured an early lead with a splendid goal scored by their centre-forward, D.R. Bullough.
Crossing over with a double advantage, Hampstead's chances of success appeared rosy, but Chesham were not to be denied, ands their strenuous efforts were well rewarded with two capital goals registered by their centre, W. Keen. With Hampstead constantly pressing, a draw seemed inevitable, but Chesham retained their lead to the final whistle, when they were loudly cheered for a deserved success.
The attitude of the Hampstead crowd to all visiting teams is worthy of special note as indicating the true amateur spirit of judging the game and not the result, and they are quick to recognise and applaud merit on both sides.
The fourth [qualifying] round of the F.A. Cup to be decided at the Avenue Ground tomorrow (Saturday) again places Hampstead against an unbeaten team. The visitors, Gnome Athletic F.C., have achieved a remarkable series of successes over important clubs, and it is anticipated that their appearance at the Avenue Ground will attract a record crowd. Kick off 2.30.
