Match Report

Hampstead Town gave an exceedingly good account of themselves on Monday evening against Charlton Athletic, at Charlton, in the second qualifying round of the London Challenge Cup. It is true that the home side drew, but a different story would have been told if the usually deadly Wise had shot under and not over the bar when a couple of chances came his way in the first half, and if Kirby, with an absolutely open goal, just before the interval, had not shot wide.

The home team had the better of the play, but they had to meet a determined set of half-backs, a couple of sturdy backs, who tackled fearlessly and kicked powerfully, and in Evans a goalkeeper of marked ability, who made many capital saves. He was only beaten once in the opening half, and that was from a tremendous drive by Steele, but the ball struck the cross-bar and rebounded into play. When the interval arrived neither side had scored, but with ten minutes of the second half gone there was a smart attack by the Charlton right, and Hampstead being unable to get the ball away, Green scored with an unstoppable shot. Less than ten minutes remained for play when Hampstead took the ball down the centre, and with the backs at fault Kirby was through and equalised with a clever shot. This finished the scoring, and there will have to be a replay.
