Those who expected to see an unusually close game at Cricklewood-lane on Saturday when Barnet met Hampstead Town in the F.A. Cup were disappointed. Hampstead, before a record crowd, defeated their old-time rivals by 3-0. At no period of the game were they fully extended, and Barnet, who, like Hampstead, have lost several of their players, had nothing like so strong a team that represented them last season. Hampstead made three changes in the front line - R. Kirby, late of Wealdstone, taking the centre-forward position, and the right wing being F.W. Packham and C.A. Smith. C. Wise (the captain) had again H.S. White as a partner on the left wing.
The improvements effected had a marked bearing on the decisive win. Kirby, a fine thrustful forward, confirmed the previous impression he made in a previous cup-tie [against Tufnell Park, the only other cup-tie played this season], and scored the first goal, C. Wise netting a second goal before the interval. Barnet made valiant efforts to get on terms, particularly after resuming, but their forwards throughout were inept and indifferent with the exception of W. Paul at inside-right. Their defence, however, was fairly sound, and G. Hughes is developing into a reliable right back. C.A. Smith scored Hampstead's third in the concluding stages. Science was at a discount, the ball being far too frequently in the air, but it proved a typical cup-tie, with a result pleasing to the Hampstead supporters.
For the greater part of the first half, play was on Hampstead's left wing, White putting in some very clever centres. Wise sent in many shots, that which scored going into the top corner of the net well out of the goalkeeper's reach. Kirby's goal was initiated by Brewer, who sent the ball to Smith, who centred beautifully. Barnet in the second half did enough pressing to deserve a goal, but the shooting was wild in the extreme.
