After effecting a meritorious draw with Charlton, the English League club, in the second [qualifying] round of the London Challenge Cup last Monday week, a result which created considerable surprise in the football world and great satisfaction in amateur circles, Hampstead were reluctantly compelled to withdraw from the competition. In the matter of mid-week games amateurs are at a disadvantage with the professionals, and after playing the Monday game in question Hampstead provided three men for the important Athenian League v. Sussex match on the following Wednesday, in which C. Wise again distinguished himself by scoring twice. It was impossible for Hampstead to turn out a fully representative side for the following Thursday, the date ordered by the authorities for the replay, and consequently a withdrawal was unavoidable, although it created considerable disappointment amongst local supporters.
