Match Report

Making one change in the team that lost to Queen's Park Rangers Reserves on Friday, the substitution of Bucci for Rees at centre-half, Hampstead made a brilliant recovery in the second half of their game with Southall on Saturday.

Hampstead opened strongly, a good movement by Walsh nearly taking effect, the ball just skimmimg the bar. After ten minutes' play Southall opened the score, a fine cross pass from Watson on the right to Mitson on the opposite wing allowing that player to run through and beat Smith easily.

Morton equalised the scores with a fine cross-shot from a pass by Butland, while before the interval Hampstead took the lead with a good goal scored by Butland from just outside the penalty area.

The second half opened sensationally, for within two minutes Hampstead had increased their lead to three goals. Potter, after cleverly dribbling round three men, walked the ball past Lewis with ease. Continuing the pressure, Hampstead further increased their lead, a fine pass by Evans out to Morton and a well-timed centre by Morton, enabling Evans to head a fine goal. Southall now made several efforts to add to their score and Collett, lobbing the ball into the Hampstead goalmouth, saw Smith make a good effort to clear, only to punch the ball in the net.

In making this clearance Smith punched the goalpost and had to leave the field for a while for attention. During his absence Bucci, Hampstead's utility man, went between the posts. Moore next added another goal for Hampstead, a fine cross-shot entering the corner of the goal. From now until the final whistle Hampstead piled on pressure, but were unable to add to their score. They well deserved their win by five goals to two.

For the winners the best players were the backs, Dean and Compton, Bucci at half, and Potter and Moore in the forward line. Ward, at back, Holliman, at half, and Breagan were outstanding for Southall.
