Match Report

At the match on Saturday a one-minute silence was observed in memory of Mr. D. Bucci and Mr. M. Sulston, whose sudden deaths brought a tragic conclusion to the previous week's match. The Golders Green players wore black armlets and the club flag was flown at half-mast.

When the teams took the field at Claremont Road on Saturday, the odds looked overwhelmingly in favour of the Police, a tall, heavy side, who dwarfed Golders Green; but the home team, who included two newcomers, soon showed that the Police were not going to have an easy day. The Green took the lead inside half-an-hour and held it until, well into the second half, a mistake by Ward brought the ball in front of the home goal and the Police equalised.

The newcomers to Golders Green were J. McCauley, a "nursery" right-half from the Arsenal, and G. Coleman, introduced by Hart.

The chief danger from the Police in the opening stages came from the left wing. Wood was very fast and was not always marked. W. Boston was playing too far up the field for safety. Offside, however, upset sevral movements and when one of Wood's centres gave Reynolds a perfect opening, Hart held the shot. Morey was rationing Tomlinson too closely fotr him to get into action, but once Golders Green were all round the Police goal and did everything but score.

A free kick was well taken by Breagan, but the ball veered away in the wind. Then Ward started a likely movement which got Coleman away and he cenred neatly, but Holman cleared the ball.

At the other end Reynolds called upon Hart and Ward cleared from Kelly. The Golders Green defence was not always well positioned, but there were many nice touches by Ward and a level performance by Lovell. The Police were better at finding their men.

Fontana nearly converted a centre from Coleman, but the score was opened by McCauley, who put through a beautiful low shot after a corner by Coleman.

Golders Green survived an onslaught on their goal, but it was a near thing when Reynolds shot with Hart out of position after clearing from Kelly. Near half-time the Green attacked strongly and Tomlinson looked a certain scorer, but fell in front of goal. The Police had to fight to keep out the Green just before the whistle went.

After the break, the Police made a flying start, but Reynolds finished with a weak shot over the bar. their finishing was rarely as good as their approach work. Play swung to the other end and Ivey held a lovely shot from Breagan and a header from Tomlinson. centres were coming in well from Coleman and one led to mix-up in front of goal. Ivey and three other men were down, but the ball was scrambled away.

Then came the gift goal for the Police. The home defence had put up a good display for most of the game, but a strong right wing attack got them worried and Ward - it was his one mistake - headed the ball in front of goal for Reynolds to equalise with a simple shot.

Golders Green showed signs of tiring and the Police piled on the pressure, but the Green soon came to life again and Coleman made a grans run which promised the winner, but he was brought down a few yards from goal. Ivey had to deal with shots from Tomlinson and Fontana and combined play between these two and Breagan almost brought a last minute goal, but the whistle went with the scores level.

Coleman and McCauley both made a grand debut for Golders Green, and other outstanding players were Lovell, Fontana and Cochrane.
