Golders Green's semi-final [of the Middlesex Charity (Red Cross) Cup] at home to Hayes produced unusual excitement, but not all due to the play. Some of it was occasioned by the spectators' protests at decisions on the touch-line. It was a good, fast game and the Green deserved their victory, even though Hayes played most of the game with only ten men, Poole having to leave the field after a fall.
There were changes in both teams. Stroud was out of Golders Green and Breagan moved forward to take his place on the right wing, Lovell going to right-half and Kingswell coming in at centre-half. For Hayes, Reeves took the place of Scully at centre-half, Poole dropped back to left-half, and Francis moved to inside-left, Findlater taking his place at centre-forward.
The game opened at a fast pace and this was maintained throughout. Hayes were the more aggressive in the first few minutes, but Lovell and Ward broke up attacks and some nice touches were seen from Cochrane and Fontana when Golders Green broke away. Soon the Hayes goal-keeper was called upon and he nearly let go a shot from Breagan following a free kick by Bucci. Shortly afterwards Bucci drove the ball just over the crossbar.
At the other end Hart saved from Pyne and Boston stopped a run by Graham. Golders Green attacked again and, off a pass from Fontana, Ellison had bad luck with a beautiful shot which struck the bar, Tomlinson shooting over from the rebound. Bucci took another free kick for a foul on Cochrane, but shot wide.
Tomlinson opened the score, converting a well-placed pass from Breagan. It was a nice effort, and put added spirit into Golders Green. Clever work by Ellison nearly brought a second goal before Hayes got really in the picture again. Their left wing was very active and Hart had some work to do. Once Graham found himself unmarked, but shot across the goalmouth.
Near half-time a movement started by Ward brought success. From his forward pass, Cochrane and Ellison went well away together and Bucci took Ellison's centre, passing the ball on to Breagan, who found the net.
The hot pace continued after the change of ends and after Francis had scored for Hayes with a penalty awarded against Boston, the result was touch and go. Hayes fought hard for an equaliser and rising excitement did not always make for good play, but it was good entertainment and pressure by Hayes brought the best out of Lovell, Bucci and Ward. Boston was over-clever at times, but generally cleared well.
Golders Green netted again, but offside was given and then the Green were awarded a penalty, but Boston was given the spot kick instead of Bucci, and he drove the ball straight to the goal-keeper, who held it well. Cochrane had a scoring chance soon afterwards, but the ball went high.
At the other end Boston was knocked out in heading away a stinging shot from Lewis, but he soon recovered. Play moved fast from end to end and the result was decidedly uncerrtain, but the Green maintained their lead to the end.
