Playing St. Albans City in the Herts and Middlesex Combination at Claremont Road, Golders Green made one change in their previous week's team, Ellison coming in at outside-left in place of F. Boston. He worked hard, but was obviously out of position. With Boston there, a higher score might have been registered. The three goals were scored by Bucci and Fontana, but Tomlinson did grand work though he was not a scorer, while Stroud, on the right wing, showed definite improvement, and one of Bucci's two goals was the result of Stroud's well-placed corner kick.
St. Albans made a last-minute change, Wallis taking the place of Howe at left-back. Braithwaite, at inside-right, was injured during the first half and did not return to the field.
From the kick-off both wings of the City tested the home defence and there were some nice clearances by Ward. Then Lovell put Cochrane in possession and he got away on the wing, passing nicely in to Ellison, but the latter lost the ball. After an unproductive corner, forced by Tomlinson, he and Cochrane went through the defence together and Cochrane got in a shot which brought the goalkeeper down, but the ball was held, and Longman also stopped a shot from Ward.
Golders Green continued to press and a lot of fine shooting was seen. One of Bucci's shots scraped over the bar, and, from a corner kick by Stroud, Breagan dropped the ball on top of the net. Lovell sent Stroud away and he made good ground before swinging the ball across to Cochrane, who drew the defence and passed to Ellison, but a promising movement was stopped by offside.
Free kicks agaiinst the City were numerous and from one of these Bucci opened the Golders Green score with a beautiful shot from just outside the penalty area. He lifted the ball well over the heads of the defenders and it glanced off the underside of the crossbar into the net.
St. Albans made several good attacks, in some of which Gough showed up well, but Lovell was everywhere at the right moment and the Green backs gave a fine display, Ward being especially steady.
Near half-time Ellison was going well when he was brought down badly and another free kick was taken by Bucci, but this time he lifted the ball too high.
After the change of ends St. Albans made a lively start and Gough nearly beat Hart with a grand shot. But Golders Green responded with a determined attack which ended with Fontana shooting well in.
The home goal had a narrow escape soon afterwards when Hart, with the sun in his eyes, lost the ball and it fell almost under the bar, but Ward nipped in and cleared in time.
The home defence were often leaving Birkbeck unmarked and he soon made profit of his chances, breaking clean away to reduce the Greens' lead.
Ellison nearly restored the margin of two, but Longman went down to smother his shot and immediately afterwards Stroud missed a scoring chance by a fractional delay.
Ward, Bucci and Lovell were playing outstandingly good football during moments of pressure against Golders Green, butat times it looked as though the City might equalise in spit of the loss of one forward.
Bucci, however, put the issue beyond doubt when he converted a corner kick by Stroud, and in the closing stages there were regular bombardments on the City goal, Longman putting up a good performance in preventing a higher score.
