Right from the kick-off, it was clear that Golders Green were streets ahead of Wood Green in their third round of the Middlesex Red Cross Cup Tie at White Hart Lane on Saturday, and it soon became merely a question of "How many?"
The visitors scored after nine minutes when Stroud received a fine pass from Griffiths and shot home. After 20 minutes Gallacher passed forward to Griffiths, who shot the second goal. Wood Green had bad luck when Nicholls, their right half, was badly injured and taken to hospital with a fractured ankle, but the course of the game had already been shaped.
After 25 minutes, Harper saved well from Griffiths for a corner. Stroud's kick went to Cochrane, who hit the ball hard and Griffiths deflected it, via a defender, into the net for number three. Three minutes later, Griffiths hit the crossbar from a centre by Stroud, and Long fastened on to the rebound to add the fourth. Within a couple of minutes Finch gave the ball to Gallacher, and Griffiths converted the pass to bring the half-time score to 5-0.
In the second half, Wood Green resorted to "offside" tactics to keep the visitors' attack at bay, but after 25 minutes Finch went through instead of passing, tricked Harper into going the wrong way, walked the ball round him and tapped it into the net - a cool and clever effort.
At this stage Griffiths pulled a leg muscle and had to leave the field. Soon after Golders Green were awarded a penalty for hands, which Bossoms converted to bring the tally to seven. Just before the final whistle Cochrane worked his way through to score the visitors' eighth.
