Match Report

Only after a hard fought game were Golders Green able to claim a narrow victory over the powerful Slough United team, Herts and Middlesex League runners-up, at the Slough Stadium last Saturday. The game was the second round tie of the League Challenge Cup, and the victory puts Golders Green into the Semi-Final with a home game against either Walthamstow Avenue or Hitchin Town.

Malcolm made a welcome re-appearance at centre half and seems to have quite recovered from his injury. He and Roberts, who gave his best display ever for the Green in goal, played the major part in the victory; this is not to detract from sterling performances by Topp, playing with a knee injury, Gallacher, definitely a strong wing half, Fisher, whose kicking showed improvement, and Maloney, who held the wily Ingram.

Slough started with heavy pressure, Fussell shooting over the bar after a good move, and Malcolm easing an awkward situation by robbing J. Clements for a corner. Then the Green attacked, and Jones did well to save a header from Cochrane, who tried hard to convert a centre by Stroud. At the other end, Roberts showed fine judgment in coming out to an awkward situation. The game swung rapidly up and down the field: a good move and centre by Stroud ended with off-side, while at the other end Roberts made a great save, tipping a shot from J. Clements, which looked a goal all the way, over the bar for a corner. Back came the Green, and another nice movement by Gallacher, Stroud and Robshaw saw the inside right's shot deflected for a corner. Roberts, soon afterwards, ran out for another great save, taking the ball from J. Clements' toe, while a minute later, he gathered well a header from Fussell.

Slough opened the second half with a lightning attack, Roberts making two good saves before the ball went to the other end and the Green were awarded a penalty. Fair, taking the kick, shot high over the bar. Slough gained two corners, then the ball returned to the other end. After an effort by Cox had been blocked, the ball went to Fair, standing at inside right, and he put in a good cross shot which beat Jones and entered the net to give the Green the winning goal after 12 minutes' play.
