Match Report

One of the finest games seen at Claremont Road for many seasons saw Golders Green fight back against a two goal deficit and finally score the winning goal in the last few minutes of Saturday's match: this was Tufnell Park's first cup-tie defeat of the season.

The efforts of these fine cup-fighting sides, especially towards the close, roused the crowd to a high pitch of excitement.

The Green were without Gallacher, unfit, at centre half, but Robshaw deputised ably. He dealt splendidly with Richards, one of the cleverest and speediest centre forwards in the amateur game. Griffiths moved to inside right, Fair to centre forward and Cochrane was at outside left.

In the early stages, marking by the Greens' backs and halves was loose, and the visitors' attack was well on top. After a quarter of an hour Tufnell Park broke through and Richards went on to give them the lead. Two minutes later, the Park were two up, Richards again breaking through to score from close range.

The Green began the second half with a determined attack, and Moon did well to turn a shot from Cochrane for a corner. The Park came back and a good move led to Weston netting from Penn's pass, but the outside left was offside. Soon after, Beuschier shot over when well placed.

Then the Green switched their forward line and slowly and surely got on top. Griffiths, who had played a brilliant game at inside right, moved to his proper position at centre forward: Stroud went to inside right and Fair to outside right. Topp (who played a great part in his side's victory) and Bucci settled down to some fine tackling while the forwards, well served with the ball, set up heavy pressure. After 25 minutes the Green reduced their arrears, Fair scoring with a good cross shot. Moon made a great save from a header by Griffiths, but after 35 minutes, Topp, coming up when a corner was being taken on the left, headed home the equaliser.

After 42 minutes a centre was sent over by Fair, Topp ran forward and as Cox cleverly let the ball pass him, the Greens' right half headed hard into the net to score the winning goal.
