The Arsenal game was the finest played by a Hendon team for many years. It also scotched the idea that our boys cannot come from behind, that the lack fight when the pressure is on.
The big occasion obviously unnerved our lads and it took them some time to settle down. During this time Radford, the Arsenal centre-forward, had helped himself to a hat-trick
Danny Lakey soon took a hand and with a great goal from an impossible angle he set the game alight. The boys really put on the pressure and just before half time John Evans collected on the edge of his own area and he put a long raking pass out to Elved Price on the right wing. Elved ran about ten yards up the wing and put over a curling centre for David Hyde to head in a great goal. John Evans was unlucky not to equalise when a shot from 30 yards hit the crossbar with the keeper beaten.
On the resumption we really took control and it was not long before David Hyde put us level from a Peter Slade pass. In the 75th minute it was the same combination again, Peter Slade beat Ure in the air and passed to David Hyde, he beat Jimmy McGill, drew the keeper and lobbed into an empty net.
Arsenal tried hard to save the game in the last five minutes but two great saves from John Swannell left us worthy winners.
