What grand entertainment our boys and the Whitley Bay lads provided in the battle of the giants last Bank Holiday Monday when we won the Will Mather Charity Cup with a 4-2 victory over the Champions of the North.
Both sides gave and took hard knocks whilst providing some skilful football and it is a credit to the officials and players of the teams for the sporting way the game went.
The Whitley Boy officials readily admitted our superiority and said their boys had benefitted from our two meetings. What a pity there was not a greater crowd to show their appreciation; the 1000 or so that were here certainly had their money's worth.
The game marked the reappearance of Roy Drake, who took over the centre forward spot from David Hyde who was suffering from a strain, and the brilliant play of our new inside forward, Keith Mills.
Keith scored two fine goals, and made one for Laurie Churchill. One disappointment was that our former skipper, Tony Knox, was orevented from turing out for the visitors, due to a shoulder injury sustained the previous Saturday against Crook Town.
