Instead of visiting Hayes & Yeading United this afternoon, we’re left with another look back in history and have a look at what happened on the 23rd January on this day.
We begin as late as 1926 and a Middlesex Senior Cup tie against Millwall United at The Avenue Ground which ended 5-1 to the home side. Cecil Wise grabbed a hat-trick whilst Oscar Reinke and J Ashby added the other goals.
Six years later a visit to Portland United in Dorset ended in Amateur Cup misery as the hosts grabbed the only goal of the game in 1932 and then five years further down the line a trip to Southall ended with a 6-2 thumping in the Middlesex Senior Cup, Bert Broadis and Fred Boston with the Golders Green goals.
In 1943, as Montgomery’s 8th Army marched into Tripoli, a Herts & Middlesex County League visit to Southall also ended in defeat, this time 2-0, however there was better luck 11 years later in the Amateur Cup as goals from Billy Core (2), Cliff Nock and Derek Snaith saw Hayes beaten 4-2.
1960 and Wimbledon were the visitors to Claremont Road in another Amateur Cup tie. The road to Wembley and eventual success continued courtesy of two goals from Jimmy Quail to defeat the other Dons 2-1 and then in 1965, Quail repeated the trick with two more goals in a 5-1 Isthmian League trouncing of Leytonstone. Peter Slade, David Hyde and Danny Lakey, the other members of the first awesome foursome, all grabbed one each.
Moving into the 1970s and a 1971 visit to Boreham Wood in the London Senior Cup ended with the Wood winning 1-0, whilst in the same competition eleven years later in 1982 saw the same scoreline as Epsom & Ewell knocked the Greens out.
Barrow made the almost impossibly long journey to North-West London in 1988 in the FA Trophy and ensured that Hendon would have to make the return trip – in midweek – for a replay after a 1-1 draw. Billy Gilmour’s late equaliser salvaged the replay for 10-man Barrow after Iain Dowie’s first half opener.
Belated revenge against Southall came in 1990 in the Middlesex Senior Cup as strikes from Alan Roughan and two from Gary Keen saw the Greens come out on top 3-2 and then a trip to Cray Wanderers in 2010 in the Ryman League ended with the Greens going down 2-0.
The final game on this day came in 2016 when a much needed 3 points were picked up at Staines Town in the League, crucial in our battle against relegation. Dave Diedhiou, Mark Kirby and Kezie Ibe netted for the Greens in a 3-1 win.
Just 13 games on this day in history have seen 6 won, just the 1 draw and 6 defeats. 25 goals have been scored and 22 conceded.
