24th January sees the busiest day yet in our look back across matches played in our history and we begin in 1914 and a 1-1 draw at home to Barking in the league. Following the end of World War 1 in 1920 we hosted Tufnell Park in the Middlesex Charity Cup and although the scoreline is unknown, it’s probably that Hamsptead Town were beaten since they did not appear in the competition again.
Moving ahead to 1925 and goals from Stan Smith (2), Ken Seabrooke and Syd Sweetman saw Hanwell Town beaten 4-1 in the Middlesex Senior Cup and six years later in 1931, Lyons were beaten 7-1 in the same competition led by a club record equalling 5 goals from Freddie Evans and one each from Bill Morton and Stan Moore.
In 1942 another fixture against Tufnell Park, this time in the Middlesex Red Cross Cup, was won this time with goals from Roy Stroud, Les Fontana and Charlie Shorland giving Golders Green a 3-0 win. Fontana was on target again 6 years later in 1948 as Hayes were beaten 3-2 in the Athenian League, Bill Reay and Bob Avis also netting.
A goal from Arthur Phebey was not enough to stop Hendon falling to a 2-1 defeat to Hounslow Town in a 1953 Amateur Cup tie but six years later Micky Moore, Tommy Lawrence and Roy Thomas helped the Greens to a 3-0 London Senior Cup win over Kingstonian.
In 1970 the club visited Evenwood Town in the Amateur Cup and returned with a replay after a John Baker goal ensured a second bite of the cherry for both teams and Baker was on target 6-years later in a Middlesex Senior Cup win over Ruislip Manor, Tony Field and Bobby Childs sealing a 3-1 success.
Another Middlesex Senior Cup tie in 1981 against Hounslow ended with a 3-0 defeat for the Greens and three years later, as Apple unveiled the first Macintosh computer, an Isthmian League visit to Wokingham Town ended with the exact same result.
A duo of Iain Dowie strikes and one from Colin Tate saw Tooting & Mitcham beaten 3-1 in the league at Claremont Road in 1987 and Steve Numes’ goal two years later saw the spoils shared in a 1-1 draw with Slough Town.
In 1998 local rivals Enfield arrived at Claremont Road and comfortably overcame Frank Murphy’s side 3-0 but in 2004 there was rather better luck as Hayes were beaten 3-2 by Dave Anderson’s men. Goals from Marien Ifura, Dwayne Plummer and Scott Cousins sealing the 3-points.
Two years later as Disney announced the purchase of Pixar studios, the Greens and East Thurrock United served up a dour 0-0 draw and 3-years later in 2009 a first visit to Wealdstone’s Grovesnor Vale saw the home side win 2-1. Jamie Busby scored for the Greens in a game that saw James Burgess dismissed along with Greg Ngoyi for the Stones who had netted the winner five minutes previously.
Three years on and the two sides did battle again, this time at Vale Farm and Ngoyi grabbed a point for the Greens giving them the lead on the stroke of half-time. David Hicks equalised shortly after the break for the Greens.
In 2015 a magnificent individual strike from Kezie Ibe helped Hendon to a 3-1 win over Kingstonian at Earlsmead, Aaron Morgan and Casey Maclaren also grabbed goals rendering Chris Seeby’s second half dismissal moot.
Of 20 matches on 24th January, 9 have been won with 5 draws and 5 definite defeats, with a 6th probable one. 38 goals have been scored and 24 conceded.
