For the second day in a row we begin our retrospective with a Middlesex Senior Cup defeat in 1921 away at Barnet. This time, almost a year to the day before our single goal defeat mentioned yesterday, the Bees won handsomely 3-0.
To further mirror yesterday’s post, our second match occurred six years later when Enfield were the opponents, albeit this time in the Middlesex Senior Cup, and were once again beaten by a two-goal margin. Strikes from G Deeks, Harry Shearcroft and two from George Howell gave Hampstead a 4-2 win.
It was in the same competition that Hayes beat Golders Green 2-1 in 1938 with Fred Boston netting the Green goal and a fourth Middlesex Senior Cup tie saw Southall beaten 4-2 in 1944 as Allied forces launched amphibious landings at Anzio in Italy, F Barker with a hat-trick and Cyril Goodchild finding the target.
For the first time the club found themselves in Athenian League action in 1949 and a couple of goals from Ted Hornsby were enough to beat Tooting & Mitcham United 2-0 before the near-succesful Amateur Cup run of 1955 continued with a thrilling 4-3 win over Cambridge City. Graeme Cunningham scored twice whilst Eric Beardsley and Swiss striker Erwin Bahler doing the necessary to take the Greens through.
Another Amateur Cup tie in 1966, as the Greens once again made their way to Wembley, saw Carshalton Athletic well beaten 4-0 thanks to a couple of goals from Dave Swain and one each from John Evans and Laurie Churchill. Six years later Rod Haider struck a hat-trick as Erith & Belvedere were beaten by the same scoreline in the London Senior Cup. Tony Bass completed the scoring.
In 1977 Steve Jefferies netted the only goal of the game as Leytonstone were beaten 1-0 in the Isthmian League and in 1983 another trip to East London ended in the same scoreline, Walthamstow Avenue this time being beaten by the only goal of the game scored by Tom Murphy.
Mick Kiely made it three consecutive single goal wins on this day in 1987 in an Isthmian League Cup tie against Chertsey Town, a run that was extended in 1991 with a Full Members Cup win over Metropolitan Police with an Andy O’Brien goal.
Three years later in 1994, Hayes ended that run in a 1-1 draw at Church Lane in the Isthmian League, Andy Polston netting for the Greens and then Paul Whitmarsh’s goal was not enough as Aldershot Town won 2-1 at the Recreation Ground in 2000 in front of more than 1800 fans.
The Greens’ miserable run under Gary Farrell continued in 2005 as a pair of goals from Ben Abbey consigned them to a 2-0 defeat against Northwood and three years later Staines Town were overcome 3-2 in the Middlesex Senior Cup as Jamie Busby, Brian Haule and Belal Aite-ouakrim found the target.
Finally, in 2011 a Dan Sintim own-goal saw the Greens slip to a 1-0 defeat at a Wealdstone side that included future Hendon players Jonathan North, Lee Chappell, Peter Dean and Greg Ngoyi amongst their number.
Of the seventeen matches on 22nd January 11 have been won, one drawn and five lost. 32 goals have been scored and 20 conceded.
