21st January 1922 is where we begin today’s retrospective look at Hendon on this day and a local derby in the Middlesex Senior Cup against Barnet which was won 1-0 by the Bees.

Six years later and another local derby provided rather more success as Enfield were beaten 3-1 in an Athenian League match thanks to strikes from Harry Shearcroft, Oscar Reinke and Jimmy Smy. In 1933, and a week after the two sides found their match abandoned, there was better luck with the weather as Uxbridge Town won 3-2 in a Middlesex Senior Cup tie, Billy Breagan and Jimmy Spalton netting to no avail.

Moving onto 1939 and London Caledonians were beaten 2-0 in the Amateur Cup, Breagan once again on target along with Bob Thomas, there was then an 11-year gap until the next fixture on this day when Twickenham were beaten 3-1 at Claremont Road in the Middlesex Senior Cup, Ernie Joyce, Bill Reay and Bob Avis the goalscorers.

Hendon, beaten finalists the previous season in the Amateur Cup, saw their 1956 run end early as Tooting & Mitcham United won 2-1, Jackie Rawlings scoring the Greens’ solitary goal and in the same competition in 1961 reigning champions drew 2-2 against Carshalton Athletic with Terry Howard netting twice to force the replay.
In 1967 neighbours Harrow Town were beaten 7-0 in the Middlesex Senior Cup led by a hat-trick from Danny Lakey. David Hogwood, Jimmy Quail and Tony Harding also scored with an own goal completing the rout.

Moving ahead to 1978 and Leytonstone were beaten 4-0 in the Isthmian League led by a brace from Rod Haider and other goals from Steve Jefferies and George Brooks and eight years later Edgware Town were beaten 3-1 in a London Senior Cup tie as Phil Gridelet, Bobby Harding and Andy Groom getting the goals to ensure smooth progress.

Three years later, in 1989, St Albans City came to Claremont Road and were beaten 2-1 thanks to goals from Steve Scott and Colin Tate and then in 1997 Yeading came to Claremont Road in the Middlesex Senior Cup and left with a 1-0 win against Neil Price’s side.

In 2006 Heybridge Swifts performed the same trick, leaving Claremont Road with a 1-0 win but there was rather better news in 2012 as the Greens visited Horsham and won 3-1. Elliott Charles, Greg Ngoyi and a rare Ryan Wharton goal ensured the points returned to North-West London and then 2 years later an Adam Wallace strike secured 3 points at Billericay Town as the Greens won 1-0.

We end today on a rather unhappier note as, in 2017, our home match with AFC Sudbury came to an unsavoury and premature note, the fixture being abandoned with the visitors leading 2-1 late on (Elliott Charles with the Hendon goal) following a passionate disagreement between the two sets of players. Skipper Kevin Maclaren saw red following what turned out to be his final appearance for the club and following a league ruling the result was allowed to stand.

Sixteen matches on 21st January have seen the club win 9 matches, draw just the one and lose the remaining half dozen. 34 Goals have been scored and 16 conceded.
