Our series of retrospectives moves on to 20th January, a day of mixed fortunes with wins, draws and defeats as well as a couple of dismissals.
Things began well enough on 20th January 1923 as two goals from Travers Day were enough to sink Kingstonian at the Avenue Ground in an Athenian League match 2-1 and Herbert Knott, 11-years later, struck to sink Hoxton Manor in a Middlesex Senior Cup tie with the only goal of the game.
As Franklin D. Roosevelt stretched the US constitution to near-breaking point by being sworn in for a 4th term as President of the United States, Golders Green and Tufnell Park played out a Claremont Road derby in the Middlesex Senior Cup in 1945 and shared the spoils 1-1, C Fair with the goal.
In 1951 Barnet were the visitors to Claremont Road in the Athenian League and were beaten 5-2 thanks in large part to a Roy Stroud four-timer, Freddie Hicks netting the other goal and 11-years later an Amateur Cup tie with Pegasus ended goal-less.
Hendon remained goalless in a 1968 Amateur Cup tie at Barking, who progressed by virtue of the only goal of the game and five years later, Richard Nixon was inaugurated for his second term as US President completely oblivious to the knowledge that Hendon had beaten Dulwich Hamlet 2-1 in the London Senior Cup, Fred Pudney and sub Bobby Childs taking Hendon through.
Six years later in another London Senior Cup tie Clapton were beaten 3-1 thanks to Alan Campbell, John Steer and Mick Garrini goals and in 1981 (Reagan this time) a John Baker goal was not enough as Carshalton Athletic beat the Greens 2-1 at Colston Avenue in the Isthmian League.
Things got no better in the early to mid-1990s as Windsor & Eton won 3-0 at Stag Meadow in 1990, Wembley came to Claremont Road in a 1992 Middlesex Senior Cup tie and triumphed 2-0 before Frank Murphy’s Dulwich Hamlet side also came to Claremont Road and won 1-0 against Neil Price’s strugglers courtesy of a Joe Odegbami goal.
Freddie Hyatt scored Hendon’s first – and last goal of the 1990s on this day in a 1-0 Puma Cup win over Gravesend & Northfleet in 1998 that saw Richard Nugent come off the bench and then return from whence he’d came courtesy of the referee’s red card after an alleged stamp by the two dugouts. The Greens would go on to lift the trophy later on that year.
January 20th 2004 saw future Welsh International Freddie Eastwood prove the difference as Grays Athletic downed Dave Anderson’s side 1-0 at the Recreation Ground, Ricci Crace seeing red, three years later goals from Jamie Busby, Brian Haule and Belal Aite-ouakrim gave Gary McCann’s side a 3-0 win at Claremont Road over fellow strugglers Walton & Hersham.
We end today’s look with an absolute belter in the Suffolk snow at Needham Market as the two sides shared the spoils in a six-goal thriller. Josh Walker and Ashley Nathaniel-George (2), who would both move into the full-time game after the season secured a point for a faltering Hendon side to keep their play-off tilt on track.
Of 16 games played on 20th January seven have been won, three drawn and six lost. 22 goals have been scored and 19 conceded.
