Following the relative success-laden dates of 16th, 17th and 18th January, today’s retrospective is a touch more sober with fewer wins and a much higher percentage of matches lost and drawn.
We begin in 1924 and an Athenian League match at Kingstonian that saw the hosts win 3-1, Lewis Smith with the consolation goal and five years later, another trip to Sutton United, this time in the Amateur Cup, saw the Ambers triumph in a 7-goal thriller 4-3. Two goals from Harry Shearcroft and one from George Bucci not enough to clinch a replay.
In 1935 a visit to the south coast to take on Worthing in the Amateur FA Senior Cup ended in success as T Edwards’ goal secured a 1-0 win and Ford Sports were beaten 2-1 in the Amateur Cup in 1946 with Roy Stroud and Melvyn Griffiths on target to ensure passage into the next round.
It was an Amateur Cup replay in 1952 that ended ignominiously with a 5-1 humbling against the giants of the amateur game, Bishop Auckland, Dexter Adams providing the briefest of succour for Greens fans with a goal, however in another Amateur Cup replay in 1957 – as the Soviet Union performed an atmospheric test of a nuclear weapon, mercifully far away from NW2 - Ware were beaten 4-0 at Claremont Road with goals from Tommy Lawrence, Jimmy Quail, Miles Spector and a visiting player’s own-goal.
1974 saw a third Amateur Cup replay on this day with Harwich & Parkeston being held to a 1-1 draw in Suffolk, John Baker’s strike setting up a third meeting between the two sides and then in 1980 Enfield won a London Senior Cup tie at Claremont Road 2-1, Roy Butler scoring for the Greens but to no avail.
A six goal thriller in 1991 at Claremont Road against Leyton Wingate ended all square, future Football League veteran Jonathan Hunt, Colin Tate and Uche Egbe off the bench were the Hendon scorers and two years later another home cup tie against Enfield, this time in the Middlesex Senior Cup, ended 3-2 to the E’s, Robbie Garvey and Jon Daly netting for the Greens.
Only a year later and a visit to Earlsmead in the Middlesex Senior Cup against Harrow Borough ended with a 1-0 win thanks to Barry Blackman before giving way to a quarter of a century before our next – and to date most recent – match on this day.
Tiverton Town were the visitors as we celebrated the life of Dermot Drummy with a number of his team-mates for the first time in 2019 and saw goals from Bayley Brown and Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick finally end a run of nine straight defeats in all competitions.
In total 12 matches on 19th January have elicited just 4 wins. Three matches have been drawn and five ended in defeats. 22 goals have been scored and 24 conceded.
