Match Report

Hampstead Town made a good start with their Athenian League programme by sharing the points at Barnet in a 2-2 draw. They might have done much better but for the unexpected absence of their left back, W.G. Brooker, which necessitated a last-minute re-shuffle of the team with a great weakening of the defence.

When Barnet, always difficult to beat on their own ground, scored the first goal, Hampstead had actually only nine men on the field, and their troubles increased when C.B. Evans sustained a blow which put him out of action for a time. Despite these set-backs, splendid goals by the new inside right, W.H. Lakin, and C. Wise, gave Hampstead the lead at the interval. Barnet equalised soon after the re-start, and in this period of the game they showed superiority, and might have won easily but for the really excellent defensive work of Hampstead's new right back, G. Hughes, who gave a sterling display.

While the old members, notably C. Wise and W.E. Brewer, played well, the whole of Hampstead's trial men gave satisfaction, and a repetition of their form on this occasion will merit more extended comment as the season progresses. Travers Day was somewhat unfortunate with one or two really good efforts, and goals may be expected from this promising player in subsequent games.
