Hampstead visited the Enfield ground on Monday, when they gave a very good exhibition, the score of two goals all fairly representing the character of the game. Neither team was at full stength, Hampstead being without Smith, Evans and Morton. Fortunately they were able to call on D.Levy, who took the outside-left position, and R. Dean, who plays at the back for the Reserves, was at outside-right.
Enfield were the better side for some time, and were somewhat unfortunate in not scoring. Cornell did not inspire confidence in goal, but he was hampered by having the sun in his eyes. As play proceeded, however, his play improved, and the good work of the backs, Compton in particular, frustrated many good efforts. Bucci and Levy were most conspicuous in Hampstead's forward line, and at the end of twenty minutes Bucci scored from a well-placed corner kick, Smith just touching the ball as it went through. Bucci shortly afterwards almost repeated the trick.
Hampstead were then handicapped by Potter getting injured, and while he was off the field Enfield equalised, this goal also being headed through following a corner. This was the extent of the scoring in the first half.
Hampstead's front line was remodelled when play resumed, Potter being at outside-right and R. Dean at outside-left. Potter was still unable to do himself justice, but on one or two occasions he was very clever. On the other wing R. Dean did a lot of foraging, but his finishing was weak. He was obviously out of place as a forward.
Hampstead, after much pressing, again took the lead, and Young, who, playing in his 172nd consecutive match, was in tip-top form. Beating several opponents by remarkable ball control, he put in a cross shot which completely beat Smith. Anderson, Enfield's right half, then left the field injured, but upon his return Green equalised for Enfield after Cornell had once saved and the ball had bobbed in and out of the goalmouth. Soon afterwards Enfield claimed a penalty kick, but had to rest satisfied with a corner kick. Later Potter, in a good position for scoring, was fouled, but F. Dean, who has been consistently successful with these place kicks, failed badly. Nothing further of note happened, each side gaining a point.
Many good scoring chances were lost by both sides. Hampstead supporters were not impressed by the way in which Wilton, their old left-back, led the Enfield forward line. Hampstead's defence did creditably, and Cornell, who is keeping goal as Smith is ill, proved a capable deputy. Bucci and Levy were the star men in the forward line.
