Match Report

Hampstead played their last League match of the season on Saturday at Claremont Road, their opponents being Uxbridge Town. Hampstead won by two goals to one, but apart from this very little satisfaction was obtained from the game, which had an end-of-the-season flavour, and evidently it is quite time some of the players had a respite. it was a postponed fixture, fog causing an abandonment of the game in January, when Hampstead were leading by two goals to none.

The fact that Uxbridge were allowed to score once affected Hampstead's position in the League table. Had they saved that goal they would have been placed above Hayes on goal average.

It was surprising to find Elwell, who has been looked upon as a back, at outside-left, but though he started well, he could not be regarded as a complete success. Nor, too, could R. Dean (a cousin of the right back), at outside-right. The old and tried hands, however, were not much better, and many opportunities were lost. The best chance of all came to Walsh just before the interval. How he failed to score is a mystery. Chances were also missed by the visitors.

No goals were scored in the first half, but upon changing ends Freddy Young, who was captaining the home side, scored two goals, the first after a real scramble, and No.2 after he had cleverly beaten three men. Perhaps he wished to give an object-lesson to the forwards.

Oakley also got a goal for Uxbridge from a pass by Willcocks. The shot was stopped by Cornell, who fell, and although it was eventually kicked clear, the referee ruled that the ball had crossed the line. Poorly as Hampstead played, Uxbridge never looked like equalising. After many weeks the players had a lively ball to contend with and were in difficulties, but the main reason for the poor display was staleness. Compton and Young were the two best players for Hampstead.
