Golders Green were narrowly defeated at Finchley on Saturday by the odd goal of three. The Green, after a fine start to the season, have only gained three points from their last six matches and now drop to eighth place in the League Table.
Golders Green badly missed Bossoms and Finch. They introduced R. Lamb at centre half and H. Robshaw at inside right: veteran George Bucci came in at inside left, while Gallacher sportingly filled the gap at left back. Finchley were without Rogers and Crossley.
Topp was again the outstanding Golders Green player. Lamb made a most favourable impression, unfortunately his services cannot be called upon regularly. Fisher played an improved game at right back, while Bucci was by far the best of the forwards : he gave Henocq pass after pass beautifully placed, but the winger failed to turn them to advantage.
Kicking down the slope in the first hslf, Golders Green were attacking for long spells and many scoring opportunities were frittered away. Fair got the ball into the net once, but the goal was disallowed for a handling offence. After 37 minutes Maloney, palpably slow throughout, was left standing, putting Finchley right through, and Popperwell gave the home side the lead.
After seven minutes of the second half, Golders Green equalised. Bucci passed the ball out to the left and Fair ran in to score. The game seemed likely to end in a draw, but after half an hour, Finchley made some positional changes, bringing Boston to right back and Young to centre forward. It was a bold, courageous move, and deserved thoroughly the success which attended it. Within a few minutes, Lowe brought the ball forward and passed to Popperwell : from his centre Young headed home the winning goal.
