Match Report

Golders Green staged a magnificent recovery at Champion Hill last Saturday and accomplished what was probably the best away performance of the day in the 1st Round of the London Senior Cup, by forcing the powerful Dulwich Hamlet side to draw, thus gaining the right to replay at Claremont Road.

Golders Green were without Bossoms, and J. Maloney deputised at left back. The Hamlet side contained a number of pre-war celebrities, including E. Mulley and T. Jover, and Amateur International H.S. Robbins.

The game was full of interest, with speedy and skilful play on a wet surface made treacherous by a heavy morning frost. It was closely contested and the Green played a plucky game, fighting back when facing a three goal deficit.

After 25 minutes, following the clearance of a corner to the Hamlet, the ball was sent back to May, who shot. Lucas had the shot covered, but Gallacher, endeavouring to head clear, deflected [it] out of the goalie's reach into the net. Two minutes later, after Lucas had made another great clearance, Belcher secured and scored the Hamlet's second from close range.

Soon after the Green launched an attack, and, with Gallacher up the field in support, the Hamlet staged a lightning come back, Jover running in to put them three up.

Things looked black for Golders Green, but they kept pegging away, and were rewarded when, after 35 minutes, Topp put in a long lob which dropped over Mulley's head into the net. Five minutes later, Robshaw put Finch through and the winger went on to further reduce the arrears, making the score 2-3, the position at half time.

There was a ding-dong battle for supremacy in the second half with the Green striving to wipe out their arrears and the Hamlet to make the game safe. Dulwich had a great chance when, after 20 minutes' play, they were awarded a penalty, but the shot was yards wide of goal. The battle continued to ebb and flow and after half an hour, it was Golders Green's turn to be awarded a penalty. Fair took the kick and scored to equalise.

The replay will probably be arranged for January 6.
