[This match was a replay of the London Senior Cup match played on 6th December 1913, which Hampstead Town won 2-0. Finchley complained that Hampstead fielded an ineligible player, a protest that the London F.A. upheld and ordered this match as a replay.]
Against Finchley on Saturday the Town were, unfortunately, unableto place their best team in the field, but nevertheless gave a grand display before a record gate at the Finchley ground. Tomkins scored a clever goal for the Town in the first half, and this lead was maintained until some minutes only remained for play. The Town then lost the services of their right wing, Merchant and Pike, through severe injuries. After looking winners all through, this handicap proved too great for the Town, and Finchley equalised through Wiseman, and Belson subsequently won the game for his side with two further goals. The game was fast and full of incident, with the Town most unlucky losers. Ballard saved innumerable shots and had twice as much work to do as Matthews, who, however, could not blamed for his side’s defeat.
