Match Report

For their final game of the season, Golders Green visited Wimbledon on Saturday in a friendly, and it proved to be one of the besst games of the season - certainly the most thrilling. Golders Green, with a very depleted side, fought back wonderfully in the second half to draw, after having been losing 5-2 at half-time.

F. Boston and Batelle were unable to get away from work, and Ellison was injured in the cup-tie last Wednesday. Lovell and Bucci, the half-backs, took up the back division, while the half-backs were Breagan, Weeks and A. Stroud (no relation to the schoolboy international winger.) The forwards were led by McCaulay.

Wimbledon pressed from the start, and Stevens, on the right wing, soon showed he was going to be dangerous. After ten minutes, from a pass by Adams, Stevens ran down the wing and centred. Clements, the left-winger, was unmarked, and he drove hard past Shackell to open the score for Wimbledon. From the kick-off the ball went to Coleman and he passed in to Cochrane, who flicked the ball forward for McCaulay to equalise.

Wimbledon then pressed hard, and Stannard and Laker were unlucky with good shots. From a forward pass by Weeks, Fontana took the ball through and scored to give Golders Green the lead, but this was short-lived, for a grand cross-shot by Stevens found the net just inside the upright. The Greens' defence then went to pieces, and goals came in quick succession for Wimbledon from Stannard, Bethel and Laker, making the score 5-2 after 35 minutes' play. Each of the Wimbedon forwards had scored a goal. Golders Green picked up towards the end of the half, and managed to prevent any further scoring. Cochrane and McCaulay had chances from Coleman to reduce the lead.

The Greens made a change for the second half, McCaulay falling back to his proper position at right-half and Breagan taking up the centre-forward position. From a free-kick taken by Weeks, McCaulay scored the Greens' third goal after ten minutes' play. Golders Green were now standing the pace better. Stroud, on the right wing, was showing quite good form and several times put across good centres which only just went over the bar. It was from one of these that Fontana scored the fourth goal. The Wimbledon forwards were well held by the Greens' defence, in which A. Stroud and Bucci played particularly well.

Play became very tense and when Fontana scored Golders Green's fifth and equalising goal about 15 minutes from time, even the Wimbledon supporters were shouting praise for the visiting forwards. So strong was the attack in this half that Shackell rarely handled the ball, only once did he have a good shot to save, and then he made a brilliant one-handed clearance for a corner.

After two shots from Cochrane had grazed the uprights, his third found the mark to give Golders Green the lead, but Wimbledon pressed back, and in the last minute scored the equalising goal through Laker in a goalmouth melee.

For Wiimbledon the outstanding players were Stevens, Adams and goalkeeper King. Considering the make-up of the team the whole of the Greens did well. Lovell stood out in the defence while Fontana, Stroud and Cochrane were the best of the forwards. Shackell had little chance with any of the Wimbledon goals.
