Match Report

Golders Green drew with Wealdstone at two all in the Middlesex Charity Cup-tie at Wealdstone on Saturday, Golders Green equalising with practically the last kick of the match. This was scored by Bramley, following a free kick for a foul by Wilton.

A draw was a fitting result. On the day's play Golders Green were the better side, but credit must be given to Wealdstone for their improved play in the second half. After they had taken the lead they fought desperately, and the visiting supporters, who attended in strong numbers, had practically given up all hope of lost ground being recovered. By drawing Golders Green will now have a cup-tie at Claremont Road, which will be something of a novelty.

For clubs of such standing the football was singularly poor. On their showing in the first half we are not surprised to find Wealdstone at the bottom of the Athenian League table. They have not yet won a League game and have only three victories to their credit. In their team at the present time are three ex-Golders Green players, J.W. Bloxham, J. Shorland and J.P. Wilton. We have heard good accounts of Bloxham from the time he joined the club, and he has well deserved all the compliments that have been paid him. On Saturday, at centre-half, he was the outstanding man on his side, and in fact there was no better player on the field. Shorland, at left-back, ably seconded his efforts, and in the second half he was often too good for Breagan. Wilton, whom we have been accustomed to see in the defence, was at inside-left. He did not appear so useful in this position as he has been at centre-half or at back, but he was suffering from the effects of a blow on the head in the previous week, and this affected his play.

While Wealdstone played poor football, the display given by Golders Green was little better. Goklders Green were still without Evans at centre-forward, and though Bramley, his deputy, tried hard, he was not too successful. The left wing, too, did not function so happily as usual, and the best work was done on the right wing.

The state of the ground may have contributed to many errors in kicking, the number of chances missed being unusually large. Both sides should have scored several more goals. The play of the Wealdstone team was of the kick-and-rush order, and this had the effect of making Golders Green follow on the same lines, with the result that really good football was seldom seen.

Twenty-five minutes passed before the score was opened, Knott then finding the net following a weak clearance. Golders Green well deserved their lead upon the run of the play, for Wealdstone had been mostly on the defensive. One of Wealdstone's best efforts came from Bloxham, Smith bringing off a good save as the ball was going into the corner of the net. While Golders Green pressed a good deal, there was a lack of punch near goal. Wylde was responsible for some good clearances, but at times he was decidedly shaky, and the visitors should have scored more than once.

Wealdstone were seen to better advantage after a goal had been scored against them, Smith keeping out some good shots. In one of their attacks Rowe handled the ball, and from the penalty kick Potts equalised for Wealdstone. Smith just touched the ball as it went into the net.

A little later Smith cleared well from Hoskins, a go-ahead player who had to be carefully watched. With the last kick of the first half Spalton missed a glorious opening, and thus the teams crossed over on level terms.

Wealdstone must have felt pleased that they had done so well, because there had been a vast difference in the play of the two sides.

The second half showed Wealdstone in a better light. Just after the restart Wilton came into contact with Smith, and was put out of action, but everyone was glad when he resumed work.

Hoskins put Wealdstone ahead, and then the game became quite lively, no quarter being given on either side, although it was by no means an unclean game. As time went on Golders Green got apprehensive, the Wealdstone defenders putting up a very stubborn fight. Shorland seemed determined to demonstate his value to his old-time friends, and Breagan found himself up against a troublesome back.

Golders Green at last netted the ball, but the whistle had previously gone for an infringement. Just on time, however, Wilton was responsible for a free kick being given to Golders Green, and from a pass by Bucci, Bramley headed through, amid considerable excitement.

The game will therefore have to be replayed on Golders Green ground. Incidentally this was the first draw Golders Green have had this season.
