Match Report

In defeating Southall by two goals to nil on Saturday last, Golders Green gained two valuable points. Freddie Evans made a welcome return to the side after his injury, and judging by the way he played, he has fully recovered. Drinkwater, however, was unable to play through illness, Bramley taking his place.

Broadis, at centre-half, kept a tight grip on Eagles, the Southall centre-forward, and Ellis, at right-back, also had a capital match.

Golders Green had a strong wind to contend with during the first half, but by keeping the ball on the ground they were soon attacking. The first incident of note, however, was when Bramley in endeavouring to head the ball collided with an opponent, receiving a deep cut over the eye which necessitated his being assisted off the field for attention in the dressing room.

Spalton and Breagan, on the Golders Green right wing, were at this period giving the Southall defence a worrying time, especially Breagan, who seemed full of life against his old colleagues. Evans, receiving a pass by Knott, made a clever individual run, but was forced over the line when about to shoot. Shortly after, however, Knott again passed to Evans, who was bundled over, and during the scrimmage which ensued Evans, although still on the ground, managed to pass the ball to Spalton, who easily netted to give Golders Green the lead.

Southall, shortly after this set-back, were given an opportunity to draw level when the referee made a mistake by awarding them a penalty for hands against Richardson, when in fact he headed the ball, but from the resultant spot kick Smith made a good save. Golders Green were soon attacking again and following clever play by Knott, who made a pass through the middle to Evans, who secured possession of the ball, drew Lewis, the Southall goalkeeper, out, and lobbed the ball into the empty net to put the visitors two up.

Southall tried hard to reduce this lead, but found the visitors' defence hard to pass. Eagles should be commended for the efforts he made to elude Broadis, but without success. The interval arrived with Golders Green still leading by two goals to nil.

In the second half the visitors were well on top and although unable to add to their score some very good football was witnessed. Lewis, in goal for the home team, made some clever clearances under heavy pressure. One save in particular from Spalton brought loud applause from the supporters. Golders Green certainly gave a splendid exhibition of football and well merited their success.
