Although without the assistance of L.H. Compton and F.P. Evans, Hampstead gained a valuable point at Romford on Saturday by drawing three all. This point put them at the top of the Athenian League.
G. Bucci took Compton's place at left-back, and J.W. Bloxham, of the Reserves, came in at left-half, while H.W. Shearcroft was at centre-forward for Evans.
Romford opened the score through A. Skinner with a good shot from the wing after ten minutes' play. However, five minutes later, after James in the Romford goal had saved a hard drive from Bramley, Butland also had a shot saved by James who was unable to clear, and from the rebound Shearcroft headed through to equalise. During a further Hampstead attack Lloyd scored, but this point was disallowed, the referee ruling Shearcroft offside.
Fifteen minutes from half-time Shearcroft gave Hampstead the lead from a centre by Lloyd. Half-time: Romford 1, Hampstead 2.
Soon after the interval Hampstead were unfortunate not to have gone further ahead when Bramley hit an upright with the goalkeeper well beaten. Romford were awarded a free kick about 30 yards out, and Adams netted with a good shot, Smith being unsighted.
Hampstead again took the lead when Lloyd scored with a long shot well out on the wing. Unfortunately the Romford goalkeeper was injured by colliding with Shearcroft, but soon returned.
Ten minutes from time the referee ruled that Bucci had fouled Webb in the penalty area and awarded Romford a penalty, and although Smith saved Webb's spot kick, Webb scored to equalise from the rebound.
For Hampstead the whole team played well, whilst D.M. Jones and A. Skinner formed a good left wing for Romford.
