At the Avenue Ground, Child’s-hill, the 2nd Grenadier Guards were met in the Premier Division, London League, and defeated by 3 goals to 1. A record crowd for the ground witnessed some clever forward play, A. W. Humphreys leading the Town's attack in splendid style, and the Guards’ goalkeeper was largely responsible for the fact that at half-time there was no score. Soon after change of ends, however, O. Sumner at inside left opened the score with a very fine shot, duplicated just after by A. W. Humphreys. The latter player again got through the Guards’ defence and with the goal at his mercy was brought down in the penalty area. W. H. Hooper scoring from the resultant kick. The Guards’ goal came later from an excellent effort by their left-winger. H. Ashman made a welcome re-appearance in this match at centre-half and played an excellent game.
