An excellent game resulted from this meeting at the Avenue ground on Saturday in the London League (Premier Amateur Division). The teams were well matched, and the result, a draw 2 - 2, was a fair reflection of the play. The Town were provided with an early opportunity of scoring, Custom House, somewhat unluckily it must be admitted, having a penalty kick awarded against them. W.H. Hooper, who usually makes no mistake with these, gave the opposing goalkeeper an opportunity of negotiating the ball, and Bidwell, rising to the occasion, cleverly diverted the shot. The Town eventually took the lead with a beautifully placed drive by A. Tomkins; Custom House equalising before the interval through their centre-forward, Legg. Many determined attempts were made by both teams after change of ends, Odgers giving the visitors the lead in scoring from a free kick with Matthews unsighted. The Hampstead half-backs were inclined to give the visiting forwards too much latitude throughout the match with the consequence that when they broke away, they were exceedingly dangerous. Legg on one occasion left the Town defence well in the rear, but with the goal at his disposal shot wide. Hampstead made many valiant attempts to get on terms, their efforts being rewarded when E. J. E. Wright, who played a sterling game at centre-half throughout, found the net with long drive following a scrimmage in front of goal. The result of this match does not materially affect the Town’s chances in the League, and added interest is given to the competition by the close proximity of the four leading clubs.
