The Avenue ground did not escape the general deluge last Saturday, but notwithstanding the adverse conditions quite a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters were present to witness the match with the 2nd Scots Guards in the Middlesex League (Premier Division) championship. From the start the soldiers were, in a dual sense, quite at sea, whereas the Town crew stuck bravely to their oars and rowed home to the tune of 4 goals to 0. A. W. Humphreys did the hat trick and J. Parker was responsible for the remaining goal; while Matthews distinguished himself saving a penalty kick awarded to the Guards. The soldiers could hardly be blamed, under the circumstances, for capitulating some fifteen minutes before the scheduled time, although the referee and the home team were quite prepared to defy the elements for the regulation period. Good football was impossible under the prevailing conditions, but the crowd were in no way depressed, the frequent comic efforts of the muddied oafs furnishing some excellent fun from the spectators' point of view.
