Match Report

As anticipated, the meeting between Hampstead Town and Luton Clarence, close rivals for Athenian League Championship honours, provided a fine contest, witnessed by a record crowd at the Avenue Ground, Child's Hill. The result - a 2-2 draw - is a fair reflex of the relative merits of the teams, Luton's superlative defence being subjected to continuous pressure throughout the first period, H. Fryer repeatedly saving from the smart Hampstead forwards, and giving a display which evoked warm commendation. Nevertheless, a breakaway and scrimmage for possession in front of the home goal resulted in H. Ford scoring first for the visitors, who led at the interval. J.P. Croal, who had previously tested Fryer with some fine volleys, eventually opened Hampstead's account, to be followed almost immediately by another goal for Luton (H. Ford). Subsequently a strong Hampstead attack was only frustrated by the visitors at the expense of a penalty, from which A.E. Mallett scored. The Luton forwards showed to better advantage in the concluding stages, but no further goals accrued.

A collection on the ground in aid of St. Dunstan's secured the fine response of £10 7s. 0.5d.

On Easter Saturday Hampstead Town entertain Metrogas at Avenue ground in the Athenian League, and on Easter Monday the last match of the season at Child's Hill will be played, Newportians, the smart Spartan League side, providing the opposition. Kick off each day at 3.30. Hampstead will be represented on each occasion by their usual eleven.
