Hampstead Town's replay with Gnome [Athletic} F.C. in the fifth round [actually the fourth qualifying round} of the English Cup excited extraordinary interest. Over 500 local supporters travelled with the team to Walthamstow, where the crowd was so great that before the game commenced the gates were rushed and hundreds entered the ground without payment. It is estimated that over 5000 people were present, and although the Town were defeated by 2 goals to nil the consensus of opinion was that on the run of the play Gnome were again very fortunate to preserve their unbeaten record.
After the match both teams were entertained by the Gnome Factory to dinner, and interesting speeches were made by important men in the football world who were present. The reputation achieved by the Town was openly commented upon, and their recognitiuon of one of the leading London senior amateur teams was confirmed.
