Hampstead [Town] with a re-arranged team gave a greatly improved display in the Athenian League match with Chelmsford last Saturday, at the Avenue Ground, Child's Hill, winning by 2 goals to 1. In an exceedingly brisk and interesting first half, J. Fearn, one of the Town's oldest members, playing at inside-right, scored twice, and with the exercise of greater judgment by the Hampstead forwards a more substantial margin could have been secured before the interval. Chelmsford were well served by their attack, and H.J. Dale, in the Hampstead goal, again proved his value as a custodian of merit. Midway in the second half, in an evenly contested game,H. H. Allwright accidentally handled in the penalty area and W. Hughes scored for Chelmsford from the resultant free-kick. Chelmsford's smart right wing was well covered by H. Woodward, a well-known Hampstead player, and J. H. Parker in his first game for the Town after the war, at right-half, revealed all his old time cleverness and well-timed effort. W. Bush, another local player of considerable ability, played his first game for the Town at inside-left with success, and G. F. Blackburn received high commendation for his excellent work at centre-half.
The Hampstead side will be further strengthened for their English Cup tie tomorrow (Saturday), with Southall, old and doughty opponents. It will be remembered that in the corresponding match in the season before the war, Hampstead defeated Southall handsomely and won their way to the divisional final. Hampstead will probably be represented by H.J. Dale; S. Dunstone, H.H. Allwright; J.H. Parker, G.F. Blackburn, H. Woodward; G. Bowler (or T.B. Poltock), J. Fearn, H. Kirton, W. Bush, G.H. Garlick. Kick-off 3.30pm.
