Hampstead Town started the season auspiciously by visiting and defeating the Wimbledon F.C. by 3 goals to 1. Both clubs are in the Athenian League, and although this was a friendly bout, it was contested in serious and determined fashion, and was followed in keen interest by a large crowd of amateur football enthusiasts.
The teams were well matched, and in an exceedingly fast and exciting game, Hampstead secured the victory by reason of the fact that their attack took advantage of their opportunities, whereas the home front line disappointed somewhat in this respect, although their attempts to score were sufficiently strenuous to prove that Hampstead have an acquisition in their new goalkeeper, H.J. Dale.
G.R. Blackburn, a new and local recruit for Hampstead, proved worthy [of] his inclusion in the team, playing throughout in convincing style, and opening the score with a fine shot. T.B. Poltock, with a characteristic individual effort, further increased the lead, but before the interval W. Dyer scored for Wimbledon.
Midway through the second half Hampstead's captain and centre half, E.J. Wright, put the requisite finishing touch to a grand combinational effort by his side. G.H. Garlick, on the left wing, H.H. Allwright, at left back, and E.J.E. Wright were most prominent throughout, and had much to do with this initial success.
On the home ground at Child's Hill, Hampstead's experimental eleven gained a good victory over Kensal Rise F.C., and with plenty of the right talent available, there is every indication of another successful season for the Town.
