Report (including full teams) from "The Sutton Advertiser", 28/04/1922, page 6.

Sutton won another two points [with a 4-1 victory] on their own ground on Wednesday evening, Hampstead Town being the visitors. The United fielded the same side as that which defeated St. Albans four days earlier, and that success induced a record crowd to visit the ground on Wednesday.

Sutton had to face the sun and wind in the first half, but they forced a corner in the first half, but then the Town men pressed, and both Brenton and Tarry were conspicuous in some good spoiling work. Hampstead were very forceful on the right wing, and their passing at times reached a high standard. Tarry had to concede a corner, and just afterwards Tarry was injured. He was off the field for some minutes, and for the best part of the game he could not do much. Hill saved well from the centre-forward and White. Bond got in a fine run, and from his pass Finn shot against the goal post. Play had been in progress for some 20 minutes before the United really pressed. Then a fine centre by Finn passed by Bond to White, who missed an open goal with a high kick.

Just afterwards the Sutton goal had an equally narrow escape. A high dropping shot from the outside-left fell in front of the goal, completely deceiving Hill, but Wise pushed it the wrong side of the post. Ten minutes from half time Weaver put in a shot which seemed to enter the goal, and there was a strong claim by players and spectators, but it was not allowed. With a minute to go Weaver passed to Finn to shoot across to [H.] WHITE and that player scored at close range, with Allen helpless.

Hampstead made desperate efforts to wipe this goal off when the teams crossed over. They forced a corner in the first minute, and for a short time it looked as if the pressure would be rewarded. Ten minutes from the restart White scored again, this being the result of a very pretty movement, Bond, Weaver and Davis being the order of progress. Davis centred with fine judgement and an exc iting heading contest resulted, which ended with [H.] WHITE heading beyond the reach of Allen.

Very even play followed, both sides attacking and coming up against a sound defence. The light was failing and once Hill saved finely at close range, the resulting corner leading to an exciting struggle. Howard made a clever solo run, but Hill saved on his knees.

The third goal came from WEAVER, at the end of a fine run by White and Davis, the latter's centre being neatly headed in. Hampstead's defence broke down rather badly after this, and two minutes later BOND broke through and shot high in the left hand corner of the net. Attacking again White nearly scored. Allen pushed the ball out to Weaver, who failed to get it round the post.

The match was nearly ended when Hampstead scored. Fine play on the right wing led to a pass across to [H.S.] WHITE, who beat Hill with a sharp, low shot. Just afterwards a corner kick at the Hampstead end led to a fine piece of work in front of the goal, the ball being headed in and out for what seemed a full minute before a Sutton player got offside and put an end to it.

Hampstead Town played a very scientific, fast and clean game, and were not three goals below Sutton in their play. Their forwards were a fine string, [H.S.] White and James being always dangerous, and the former being the best of a clever lot. The halves were good, and the backs made few mistakes, whilst Allen had no chance with either [any?] of the shots that scored.

Sutton played an equally clean and fast game, and of the two teams lasted better, their speed in the last half hour being a big asset in goal getting. The combination worked exceedingly well, but once or twice the defence showed a tendency to bunch too much. Hill had comparatively little to do; the backs played a sound game, and the halves were all excellent. Bond was no quite so good as on the previous Saturday, and Finn was a little bit "off colour." [H.] White, Davis and Weaver were full of dash, and it was the dash and complete understanding of the forwards that led to victory.
